My son came inside last night and went to get his camcorder to take a picture of the moon. He thought it looked freaky! When I asked him about it, he said it had a lit up ring around it. When my middle child agreed that it was worth going out to look, I had to check it out. I was looking for a small ring close to the moon and almost missed the very large ring that actually spanned quite a distance. It was great. Honestly, it did seem a bit strange. So, I came back in to tell the others that, yes, they needed to go take a look. I do believe everyone thought it was worth the effort.
I googled to see what was up with the sky last night. I found that this phenomenon is called a moon halo and folklore says that bad weather is coming. Well, today is cold but a beautiful, sunshiny day. I honestly don't know what the forecast is for the rest of the week. If the number of stars in the circle does have anything to do with the timing of the bad weather, well, I missed that part. I was way to taken with the ring to notice the stars. I need to be more aware of the details!
Unfortunately, my son's pictures did not work out. I did find a link with a picture that was taken from a previous ring that is pretty close to what we saw. You can take a look here. You can also take a look here for a view of another halo and some additional information.

I grew up in the northeast and, when there was a ring around the moon in winter, it meant SNOW and probably no school tomorrow!
By the way, it usually held true.
Oh, that looked pretty. It's neat that your son noticed that too. Most boys are staring at a video game instead of at the moon.
Sandra, I am thankful that my son takes notice of the world around him (even though he does like video games also).
it is a wonderful moon, i wish i see there.Thank you for your nice photo. i like to see the phenomenon of nature and your son is genius :-)
